I saw a report a few minutes ago that U.S. forces may have Osama Bin Laden surrounded. According to the report, they are essentially waiting for an order from the Bush administration to capture bin Laden. The report's author believes that Bush will time the capture to maximize the effect it will have on his re-election campaign.
I'm generally not one to espouse conspiracy theories. But I remember reading this article a while back that said that Madeline Albright, among others, believes that the US already knows where Osama Bin Laden is hiding, and they are waiting to announce it so it will have the most positive impact on Bush's re-election hopes.
Today I found the aforementioned article from an Australian paper saying US forces have bin Laden surrounded. But no corroboration at all from any US news sources. That's a little odd!
If it's true, and Bush can publicize a bin Laden perp walk a few weeks or months from now -- maybe right around the Democratic convention? -- can even the media's beloved John Kerry survive?
Here's an excerpt from the article in the Weekend Australian:
Bin Laden 'boxed in' by US soldiers
February 22, 2004
OSAMA bin Laden is reportedly surrounded by United States special forces in a mountain range that straddles north-west Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Internationally respected investigative journalist and author Gordon Thomas says the al-Qaida terror group leader has been sighted for the first time since 2001 and is being monitored by satellite.
In a report to be published in a British newspaper, Thomas says bin Laden is in a mountainous area to the north of the Pakistani city of Quetta...
Thomas attributes his report to "a well-placed intelligence source" in Washington who is quoted as saying: "He (bin Laden) is boxed in..."
The US special forces are "absolutely confident" there is no escape for bin Laden and are waiting for the order to snatch the shadowy terrorist leader.
The timing of that order will ultimately depend on President George Bush, the report says.
"Capturing bin Laden will certainly be a huge help for him as he gets ready for the election.
"It will be an even bigger bonus than getting Saddam."
